You are now entering the world of my thoughts.

This blog is my diary of works in progress. The only way a writer can improve upon her skill is to practice, practice and practice some more. Here, in this place of quiet peace, I pen to paper my thoughts and creativity. Welcome to my world.

Picture Prompt: The Lost City.......

No one knows for sure how I met my demise. There have been a lot of discussions, speculations, research, and even grand expeditions to find me and learn about my history and final days. But I was there. I know. Built by hands that were neither god nor human, I governed the great waters that nestled between the vast East and West continents. With knowledge and technology far greater and more advanced than any on the planet, my builders ruled supreme. A city of wonder, a city of power and a city of wealth; I was a city that all wanted to conquer and possess. For thousands of years they ruled in peace, but slowly, like the sanding of shores, corruption crept into and infested the hearts of the builders. The battle began not just from outside the great city walls but within. In a sacred room in the center of the city’s heart, the high elders made one final attempt to protect their city from the wicked and ruthless. During a great storm, they used every bit of their knowledge and power to hide me from the weak and narrow-minded. In one great wave, the finest, most technologically advanced city in the world vanished taking with it thousands of years of knowledge and wisdom. Some say a great tsunami swept me away, some say a devastating earthquake seized me while others don’t think I ever existed. But I know better. I am here to say I do exist. Once a strong, formidable, sight to see, I am here beneath the depths. A remnant of my glorious past, I am hidden away forever.

Picture Prompt: Crying Girl

Lowered gaze, a silent tear,

No one knows my worries,

my fears.

No one stops, no kindness to share.

they keep on walking

without a care.

I sit alone, waiting to hear,

all the while holding on

to what's dear.

My dignity, my pride,

my soul, my life.

Book Review: Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal

Hi friends! Here is a book, children's albeit, that I thought was really fun and interesting to read. I have always loved reading fairy tales growing up and Cinderella was a classic favorite. Growing up, I found other versions of the story from different cultures which were fun to read as well. Tonight however took the culturally diverse cake. :)

Once upon a time in Mexico.... in Iran... in Ireland... in Zimbabwe...... there lived a girl who worked all day in the rice fields..... cooked in the royal kitchen..... tended the cattle.... then spent the night by the hearth, sleeping among the cinders. Her name is Ashpet.... Vasalisa.... Sootface.... Catskin.... Cendrillon.... Cinderella.

In this retelling, snippets of the story unfolds across cultures, each page beautifully illustrated to represent each country. However, to truly appreciate this diverse telling of Cinderella, one would have to know the story to begin with and the fact that there are many different versions of the story. While I think older children would benefit reading the story alone, younger children would be confused by it especially if the classic story is the only one they know. Great picture book though!

**** stars for unique story-telling and beautiful illustrations!!!

Tuesday Tunes: Brothers Under the Sun

Things are.....as it should be.

We often find ourselves wondering about the should have, would have, could haves in life. Things we see that others have and that we want for ourselves. Yes, it is nice to work hard to achieve an outcome, an outcome that would or could make life a little better, a little easier or maybe just a little more different. I am a hard worker and I have dreams and goals that I want to reach as well so I sometimes fall into that "looky-loo" trap (seeing what's around me and trying to get it for myself.) But right now, I am at a moment in life and time where I feel good about myself, my state of mind, my state of happiness and my state of life.

Things are....
as it should be.

I am not rich, but I have what money I need for when I need it.

I may not live in a big house, but I have just enough room to call my own.

I don't have the highest paying job, but I love where I work (and it pays my bills :D)

I may not have a ton of friends, but I have the best friends EVER!

I don't drive the newest fad cars or wear the high brand clothes, but my car gets me to where I need to go and I have all the right clothes I need to make MY statement!

I may not know where I am going, but I am definitely up for the ride.

I don't always know what to say, but I always know when to remain silent.

I may not be famous, but I am known for my heart and smile. :)

I don't know when I will get a chance to finish my higher education, but I will continue to strive and reach my goals in life.

I may not have the perfect man, but I have what it takes to find him, right mind, right intentions and a better understanding of myself.

I don't know what my destiny is, but I have been blessed with the tools to shape it.

My life isn't celebrity worthy, but my life IS worth celebrating.

Things are.....
definitely.....
as they should be.

To read or not to read....

I feel so guilty |0_0| I think I have committed "booktry".

I have yet to open the "The Kingdom." So here is the deal, every time I have the desire to sit down and read, something comes up that takes my attention away from it. Then, there are the times I go to pick it up and another book catches my attention. Today would have been the day to start. I had an hour and a half long wait for my sister to pick me up from work and was the perfect time for me to start reading The Kingdom only I did not have it with me! I had taken the book out of my purse and left it at home some days ago and forgot to put it back. |<.<.| So, I did the next best thing, I took a walk through B&N. I had originally planned to just browse the bookshelves to kill time. They have a few comfy chairs for reading in the store so when I saw

"The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown, I grabbed it and got comfy in one of those chairs. Well, after an hour and a half, I got up to find my way home (on foot |`_'| that's another long story!) So, the prologue and first ten pages into the book I was hooked. I bought and have started reading TLS before even beginning TK. I feel horrible, it has been almost two or three weeks and I have not started on the book. TLS is not the first book either, I read "I am Nujood....", albeit it was a really easy and quick read, I feel like I am doing TK a disservice having up in my currently reading section. I don't want anyone to think it is a boring book or that the book is not interesting just because I can't see to finish it.

So now I am torn between reading

Tuesday Tunes

I have been listening to this song for a while. I got to thinking about all my loved ones who have passed on and just remembering the legacy they left behind. My thoughts and prayers go out for my mom, grandmother, grandfather and uncle tonight, and every night. I love you all and I pray one day, God-willing, we are all reunited in heaven.

Monday Muse

A very pretty flower that I saw on a stroll Sunday around noon.

I think it is so funny sometimes when people talk about Monday blues and what not. Well, today I was NOT laughing! neither were my little ones! For some reason, everyone was just off. I was extremely tired, despite have a fairly decent and relaxing weekend, the children were tired and cranky with one another, my poor co-teacher had fewer than four hours of sleep before having to open our classroom at 6:30 in the morning. But somehow, we pulled it all together and had the children giggling and marching to the tune of "Dinosaur March" and waving colorful rainbow ribbons. :D

My two siblings. Check out the amazing view! This was taken at my sister's university. I love Mount Rainier! It will be feeding my muse for the rest of the week! :D

Character Clue: Nusa

Illustration and Writing Copyright © 2011 SN Taylor, All Rights Reserved

Naqabashi Warrior: Nusa

I’m no human, but even I know it is rude to sneak up behind someone and spy on her. Yes. I am talking to you there, peeking from around the door, hiding behind your wall of silence and cloak of secrecy. Come in. You have many thoughts on your mind and unless you spit them out of your human mouth, they will remain a loud turbulent storm crashing about in your head and mine. You have no idea how annoying that is for my kind and me. While you may not recognize the sensation of your roaming untrained thoughts, it is a cause of great mental disturbance for us. Yes, human, I am telepathic. I can read your thoughts, feelings and emotions even as you stand there behind the door. What am I? What rock do you live under? Have you not heard of my kind? Really, your inferior intellect is most taxing! There is not a warrior or space faring traveler who has not heard of the Naqabashi. Our battles are most historic and memorable, well; at least for us they are, we have lost nearly none. Stop trembling, and do come in. I’m not going to tear you apart, despite what may be rumored about us, Naqabashi are not THAT violent, unless of course you give us a reason. Be quick before I change my mind. I have never trusted humans, but you are different.

Check out Nusa's profile.

A Special Gift for Daddy

Adila was sitting on her porch. It was father's day and she did not have a special gift for her father. She sat with her face resting in her hands. A bee buzzed around in the garden. It was a big fat fuzzy bumble bee. She watched as it danced in the air.

"What do you think I should get daddy for father's day," she asked out loud.

As if the bee heard her, it danced in circles until it landed on a lavender flower.

"Daddy likes the color purple, but he is allergic to flowers," she shook her head.

The bee danced in circles away from the garden. Adila stood up and followed it. The bee landed on leaf near a bunny napping in a patch of grass.

"How cute," Adila whispered, "but daddy is also allergic to animal fur," she shook her head.

The bee passed a frog sitting on a lily pad and circled over the pond with little fish. Adila thought for a while.

"Daddy does like to fish and this is his favorite pond, but we did that yesterday," she shook her head.

Adila followed the bee as it danced in circles until it landed on her porch. Adila sat down on the porch with her face in her hands.

"I'll never find a special gift for daddy for Father's Day," she said shaking her head.

With a zip and a buzz, the big fat fuzzy bee quickly disappeared into the trees behind the garden. Adila heard a buzz, then two, three, and four, then more. She looked up and saw many big fat, fuzzy bumble bees dancing in circles in her garden. The bumble bees formed the shape of a heart and buzzed loudly for Adila to hear and see. Adila smiled a great big smile.

"I know what I can give daddy for Father's Day," she said nodding her head.

She ran into the house and jumped into daddy's arms and squeezed him tight.

"I LOVE YOU, DADDY," she said with all her heart.

Thought for the day: Just Write

As I browsed the web today, I visited Polaris Blog and a wonderful quote caught my eye!

"If you're going to be a writer, the first essential is just to write.

Do not wait for an idea. Start writing something and the ideas will come.

You have to turn the faucet on before the water starts to flow."

~ Louis L'Amour

I love this quote. It is true on so many levels, not just writing. IF you want to be or do anything, you have to take the first step. Nothing comes to the one who just waits for something to happen. Do and you will be! :D

A tribute to dad...Happy Father's day!

A Dad is a person who is loving and kind,
And often he knows what you have on your mind.
He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends.
A dad can be one of your very best friends!
He's proud of your triumphs,
but when things go wrong,
A dad can be patient and helpful and strong
In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part.
There's always a place for him deep in your heart.
And each year that passes, you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud just to call him your dad!
Thank you, Dad...
for listening and caring, for giving and sharing,
but, especially, for just being you!
Happy Father's Day.

Picture Prompt: Rear View Mirror

He said he'd never let me leave, holding my throat in the grip of his rage.

He said I'd never make it out the door.

He said I was stupid, worthless and could never make it on my own.

He said I needed him to live, to survive.

He said many things that night.

But he lied.

My throat has healed and all I see now is my shackled past in the rear view mirror.

Picture Prompt: Still Standing

Pic from here

THEY came to our world without warning or invitation. In a single bright flash, they changed our very existence. We once ruled the forest, holding it together with our gripping roots; our strong, ever-reaching branches and thick leaves protected all who sought refuge from the burning rays of light. We were alive. We guarded and protected for as far and wide as the eye could see. Then THEY came, invaders, thieves, consuming every goodness we had to offer, even those we tried to hide. When THEY were done and could not take anything else from us, they left. In a single bright flash, they were gone leaving us to take our last breath. But even in death, we still stand, watching over the memories of our legacy and centuries past.

Yep! I got the summer reading fever! :D

Book Review: The Ark

The Ark: Book Review

I give this book 3.95 stars. This was really interesting book to read. I love books that are centered on archeology ever since I fell in love with Star Gate's character, Daniel Jackson, who was an archeologist that studied ancient Egypt's pyramids.

The Ark also explored the age-old story of Noah's ark in the bible, its location and its history and a secret treasure hidden within it. The theory posed in this story of what the ark really looked like was different but very interesting and entertaining. The chapters were packed with lots of action. Something was happening in each chapter, either someone or something was blowing up or a piece of information was being obtained to move the story along. I love a story that does not have sex scenes or romantic elements. This story almost satisfied me in that respect but of course the lead male and female characters were so closely involved in the mystery and the fact that they shared one thing in common, someone wanted them both dead, they spent quite a lot of time together. What happens when two people spend that much time together? Yeah, one or both start developing feelings for the other and the rest is history. Now, while there was that element, I loved that I only had to skip maybe a few paragraphs of one such encounter and a kissing scene. Two scenes are not bad for an adult novel. I appreciated that because I really liked the story and all the thrills, action and mystery.

Short Summary of The Ark (hopefully I don't give any spoilers!)

Dilara Kenner is a well-known archeologist on a Peruvian dig. She suddenly finds herself thrust into a whirlwind of chaos when Sam Watson, an old family friend, contacts her about some information about her father, Hasad Arvadi, who has been missing for three years. Just before he tells her what he knows, Sam is killed right in front of her eyes. She learns about her father's recent research and finds out he found the real Noah's ark and that he wasn't just missing, but it was most likely he was dead, killed for something that would change the face of humanity. Just before Sam takes his last breath, he is able to tell her to get help from Tyler Locke. She does, only Tyler has no clue who or what she is talking about or why a man named Sam Watson would send her to him. Tyler is an engineer. Dilara manages to make contact with Tyler on an oil rig in the Atlantic ocean. She barely escapes a helicopter crash as she reaches his rig. When something goes wrong on the rig that cause a huge explosion, Tyler is convinced that someone wants Dilara and Tyler dead for something they may or may not know. Being an ex-military type, he takes it personal when his life and the life of his military friend Grant are threatened. He takes her back to Seattle which starts a whole new ball of death traps, attempted assassinations, and more dead ends but they also find out that her father's research about the secret of Noah's ark and the mysterious death of Hayden, a famous star, are connected. They also find out they have less than a week to discover who is trying to kill them, why their killers want them dead, what killed Hayden and his entire flight crew, and where the real ark is before the world as they know come to an end.

Book Review: Mr. Monk on the Road

I really enjoyed this story in the Monk series, "Mr. Monk on the Road." It started off as usual with Monk being involved and solving a murder then it moved on to the subject in the title, him getting his brother out of his house and hitting the road in an RV camper. At first, everything seemed random, the way he kept finding murders and trying to get involved with each case. Notice I said TRYING, with Teeger by his side, she kept him focused on their mission, to show his brother, Ambrose, the world with out stepping foot outside the comfort and safety of his 'home' aka, the RV camper. I kept wondering what the end would hold for me as I am use to Monk stories being about a particular quest to solve a particular murder mystery with lots of yummy mysteries in between. I was floored at the end of the book. It was everything I hoped it to be. Mysteries solved! This story is all about making sacrifices and facing fears, something Teeger and the Monk brothers have to overcome.

The Sound of the Universe

I am a stargazer at heart. Everything about the universe makes me swoon. It's beauty, diversity, mystique, grandeur, and vastness is breathtaking. But what is it like out there? Have you ever wondered what the universe sounds like as you gaze out at the night sky. What about a galaxy, a star or even a passing comet. What does a star nursery sound like. Is it loud, explosive, deafening, or quiet, peaceful, and faint. I would imagine it has to have some kind of sound. Nothing as violent as a supernova can be silent. Or even the birth of a star, combustion has to have a sound of some kind. Below is a beautiful video of pictures of the universe as seen through the lens of the Hubble. While it does not have the sound of the universe on it, the pictures can only make you wonder, dream and guess what it is really like out there, sounds and sights alike!

Enjoy!

In the News: I Inspire, inc

I recently came across this wonderful site called I Inspire, inc. What a wonderful cause to support! Reading to children is a must in my book, reading to children who are ill is a greater must. Check out the I Inspire page and show your support in bringing comfort, inspiration and empowerment to children. "Like" the page and send in donations. With your help and support, this organization and its volunteers will reach the hearts of many sick and/or hospitalized children.

Here is some general information taken from their facebook page: I Inspire, inc. is a U.S. based nonprofit that uses the arts to soothe hearts and inspire minds. Our signature program is "I Inspire Hearts™" where community volunteers read stories to children in hospitals using iPads. This aids in the mental and emotional health of children helping to make a rather antiseptic environment more warm and comforting to them.

Their mission is to use the Arts as a unifying tool that comforts children, enhances personal development, brings people together, raises social awareness, builds understanding across communities and inspires people to think, create, share, collaborate and volunteer for positive change.

A Story in Every Song

I would like to think that musicians are every bit like writers. They have a story to tell in their music. Every song has it's tale. I like to hear these pieces, especially the ones with no words and try to hear and feel the story the musician is trying to tell. I have recently been listening to an instrumental track where the artist is using an Armenian Duduk. Listen to the video then read my interpretation. :) I would love to hear your interpretation of this song as well! :D

This is a sad story, one that ends with uncertainty. It is a story of two hearts who desire unity but destined to be torn apart. The heart of the past and the heart of the future. The past, dark cold and empty, and the future, bright warm and full of life, has so much to gain in their relationship. With the knowledge which the past possess, the future has the opportunity to be better, to have a greater quality of life. With the future, the past the ability to right wrongs, have a second chance to live and grow from its mistakes. But these two hearts can not exist together. They are destined to be separate, longing for each others embrace, an eternal marriage. But, perhaps, not all is lost on this doomed couple. Perhaps their story is not over. They have one thing in common, one thing that links them together forever, one thing that can never change. They have the present. The present will keep these to hearts joined together until the day comes when there is no past, present or future.

Blog Treasures

I have been busy lately and have not been able to post regularly all the little bits of treasures I have found over the web. I will post them today, they are all so wonderful that even late, they are a treasure to behold! :D

First, Katrina Lantz shares some wonderful notes on, Hook (What is it, parts of a hook) and Theme and Structure at a conference she attended. Jump on over to her blog, it is worth the read!

Second, Heather Mccorkle gives advice.. on taking Industry Advice. When you have a lot of great people telling you conflicting advice about your writing, it can be very daunting. Who do you listen to, or do you listen at all? Check out her blog and how she views taking industry advice. Don't forget to check out her Twitter Tuesday post with lots of goodies there.

Third, lots of wonderful and insightful poetry over at the blog of A Poet Named Fida. My favorite for this week is "All She Needed," that poem described exactly how I was feeling at the time! :D

Fourth, Karen Strong gave me lots to think about regarding my Word Count Obsession and her Never Give Up post was right on time! I wont bore you with all the little details but I will say this, I am inspired. I will not give up on any of my dreams, especially my writing dreams! :) Thanks Karen!

I will end this post with a video talking about the difference between a Writer and an Author. Enjoy!

Character Music

I have been spending a lot of time trying to develop one of my characters in my novel. In my attempt to get to know her, hear her voice, I have learned a lot about her personality, her history, and culture. Like many writers, I sometimes like to listen to music while I write. I find that it helps me block out other noises around the house like the tv, computer, phone and etc. I was listening to Yanni one day while writing about this particular character, Nusa from the Naqabashi clan. One of the instruments playing was a duduk, an Armenian instrument. It was really pretty. It somehow fit in with the mood of the writing, the personality of my character, and the topic being discussed. So I looked around for other songs similar to Yanni's and came across this cd. I chose three songs that I felt represented my character's situation:

Nare nare
Araksi artassouken
Nusrat's allap

Although all of the songs were really nice, most just were not what I needed for Nusa.

What music or song would best define your character?

Web Picture of the week!

This photo of the Milky Way Galaxy has been feeding my muse for the past couple of days since I found it. What I find so amazing about is that it was produced by a amateur photographer, Nick Risinger, who spent an entire year photographing the night sky in various regions. It took him over 37,000 exposures to complete this beautiful masterpiece of our night sky. For someone like me who lives in a city where seeing a star in the night sky is rare, this photo reminds me of my early childhood when I could stare up at the night sky in awe at the sheer beauty and mystery of the universe. Forget counting sheep, I counted stars! ( I miss those days.) Check out Mr. Risinger's website, Photopic Sky Survey. An awesome feature of the website is you can actually zoom in on different areas of the picture (I mean reeeally zoom in) without losing the clarity of the photo. This picture will be feeding my muse for a long time!

Summer TBR List 2011

With summer approaching, I want to get together a list of books to keep me entertained and away from the tube. (except for Phineas & Ferb, MONK, and a few other shows I can't live with out :D) So I am looking for some great reads. Got any suggestions? Here is a little background info on stuff I like to read. I love SCIFI!!!!! So anything along that line is great (so long as it is not romantic stuff. I HATE romance novels!) I also love detective, mystery novels like Agatha Christie and Lee Goldberg's MONK series. So what is out there? My goal is to read 25 books over the course of the summer. So I need good books that keep me going. IF I am not hooked within the first two chapters, it is all down hill for me. Unfortunately, I have the mind of a toddler when it comes to things I'm not interested in!

My Summer To Be Read List

1. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The Shape Of Stories (video of Kurt Vonnegut)

This is a hilarious video that explains the shape of a story. The Professor actually describes three types of story plots. I would love to thank Katrina L. Lantz for sharing this video on her blog. :)

What story are you writing?

Life among the stars

One day, after we have depleted all our earth's resources, we will look to other planets to call home. One day, when our air is thicker than the fog rolling over the hills and heavier than rain fall we will look to our galaxy for a better drink. One day, when the ground can no longer support life, it may be possible to form colonies of life on dead planetary bodies. Who knows, it may be that one day we may get it right and preserve the one true blue gem we have in our solor system. If not, we may be looking at spheredome colonies as future homes of our kind. *Sigh*

Dearest Mama

Through out my life, Allah (swt) has blessed with so many things, awesome family, trusted friends, valuable life experiences, fun travels, wonderful job, good health, and a great sense of humor. :D But there is not one blessing from Allah (swt) that I cherish greater than the mother He blessed me with.
Dearest mama,

You are my heart, my soul, my wonder and my goal.
I love you mama because you…..

Loved, nutured and cared for me, even when I was wrong.

Offered me wisdom and guidance as a wonderful role model through every bumpy turn and fall I took.

Valued my feelings, ideas, hopes, and dreams even when no one else did.

Encouraged, inspired and supported me in all my endeavors no matter how far my imagination carried me away.

Devoted your life and made great sacrifices for me so that one day, I too could touch the lives and hearts of so many family, friends and the stranger in need.

me, for who I was, am and will always be,

your precious child, eldest daughter, and best friend.

With all my heart,

I love you Mama.Y
