Book Blast: The Telsa Gate by John D. Mimms

Tesla GateThe Tesla Gate

When a cosmic storm enters Earth’s atmosphere, scientists are baffled by its composition and origins, but not nearly as much as they are by the storm’s side effect – anyone who has died and chosen not to cross over is suddenly stranded here, visible, and can interact with the living. With the world thrown into chaos, Thomas Pendleton is eager to make up for many broken promises to his six-year-old son, Seth. Soon after the storm, they set out on a road trip to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, completely unaware of the social and political maelstrom they’re heading into that will change their lives forever.

Excerpt (The prologue)

The day the storm hit, the world was changed forever. Its severity would not be measured in property damage or loss of life, although the latter could be argued. This storm’s impact turned man’s beliefs completely upside down; the social upheaval would be worse than the aftermath of any storm in history. Though this storm did not bring hurricane force winds, driving rain, cyclones or even floods, its effects would be far more subtle … but the impact every bit as palpable. This storm had unique origins and, unlike most weather events, it was not relegated to one geographic area. Indeed it covered the entire planet; no one was left unaffected. Living or dead

I loved the Wizard of Oz as a kid (and still do as an adult!) My favorite character was the cowardly lion :D If they were to make another movie, I would love to see Dorothy go back to Oz or maybe her granddaughter to find the cowardly lion, scare crow and tin man :)

Assured Destruction: Script Kiddie

Jan Rose no longer steals data from the old computers she recycles. She doesn't need to. As the newest member of the police department’s High Tech Crime Unit, the laptop of a murderer has landed on her desk. Her job: to profile and expose a killer.

But that’s not all.

A creep lurks in the shadows, stalking a friend, and Jan must stop him before the hunt turns deadly. The clock counts down for Jan to save her friend, her job, her boyfriend—maybe even her life.

“A fun, fast-paced thriller guaranteed to distract teens from Facebook ...”

Michael F. Stewart's Bio:
After crewing ships in the Antarctic and the Baltic Sea and some fun in venture capital, Michael anchored himself (happily) to a marriage and a boatload of kids. Now he injects his adventurous spirit into his writing with brief respites for research into the jungles of Sumatra and Guatemala, the ruins of Egypt and Tik’al, paddling the Zambezi and diving whatever cave or ocean reef will have him. He is a member of the International Thriller Writers and SF Canada, and the author of the Assured Destruction series, 24 Bones, The Sand Dragon, Hurakan, Ruination and several award winning graphic novels for young adults.

My Review + Giveaway:

Script Kiddie is the second book of the series, Assured Destruction. And like the book before it, I really enjoyed it. It was fast paced, hair-raising, heart-pumping fun. And the story development kept me turning the page even at 1 in the morning! However, I give Script kiddie 3 stars on Goodreads where the first book had four. Here is why:

Jan is a great girl, driven to help and protect her friends and family, even if it costs her life. I admire that in this character. I really felt for her. But she is only 16 and sometimes the situations she gets herself into or the unreasonable things that is expected of her is just too much to take in. And her relationship with Jonny is unrealistic to me, more like forced. Theirs border on being mad at each other and awkward make out sessions. I mean really, what does she see in a boy that she feels the only way to pacify him is to make out with him once in a while. Sure he is useful for driving her around now that she is sort of disabled but what else is there......and why the heck does he put up with her putting everyone first and leaving him for whenever she has the time or need. To be honest, I like him, he is a great friend but I just don't think they are right for each other. BTW, I was team Karl in Assured Destruction :D

But it was such a good story! I can't help feel a little disappointed book #3 is not out yet. The author leaves some burning questions and now all I want to know is, where and what happened to Jan's father? Really, just who is Peter, her mother's boyfriend, why IS he so interested in her mom and Assured Destruction? And what has Jan gone and gotten herself into (again)?

Book Excerpt:

Ferdinand finally stopped, allowing Alexander to catch up. “Did you bring the key with you, young man?”
“Oh, yes! Is this what you’re talking about?” Alexander pulled the strange key out of his pocket. The sparkle and beautiful chiming intensified in his hands.
Ferdinand was mesmerized. “I haven't seen that key since....” The frog's eyes gleamed. It was apparent he had a connection to the key. “Let’s see if it still works.” The creature disappeared into a thick fern.
Alexander pushed the fern back to find him rubbing his long-fingered hands together with anticipation in front of a large dead tree. “Okay, it’s a dead tree. What are we doing here?”
“Hush!” Ferdinand whispered with a sting in his tone. “We must watch for the Passageway. It appears; then it's gone at the blink of an eye.”
Within seconds, the rays of the sun shot through gaps in the surrounding trees onto the thick trunk. A small portion at the base took on a brassy tone, and radiant emerald leaves instantly sprouted from every curvy branch.
“It’s—it’s—magic—it has to be! Amazing! ” Alexander gasped. This was the tree in his dreams.
A glowing light beamed through the center, forming a slit barely large enough for the key to fit in. Alexander brought his hands to his face, partially covering his eyes. “I—I can't believe this is happening!”
“Alexander, hurry—the key—put it in!”
Alexander fumbled with the key and quickly slid it in the slot. The key turned on its own, without the help of Alexander's nervous fingers. Almost immediately, a portion of the tree dissolved into the tiny specks of light Alexander knew all too well. They danced in celebration, creating an intense energy field.
“Come, Alexander—we must move quickly!” Ferdinand took a blind leap into the specks of light and disappeared.
“I'm afraid!” Alexander was frantic. He had visited this tree in his dreams many times before. Could his mother have been trying to tell him something? “This is crazy! What have I gotten myself into?”
This was far beyond anything Alexander could have ever imagined, but his heart ached for his mother, and he wanted answers. He knew if he truly wanted things in his life to change, this was something he must do. He closed his eyes and took a flying leap into the tree.

 My Review:

I have to say, I was really impressed with this book. Assured Destruction was a fun, captivating, fast-paced and adventurous read. Mystery does not even begin to describe the suspense of the book once it get toward the middle of the story. Most books I don't read in one day, but this one I could not put down!

Janus Rose is a sixteen year old who works at her mother's business, Assured Destruction, a place where people go to have their electronic devices recycled or completely destroyed.  Her mother has MS and therefore relies a lot on Janus to help keep their business running and caring for her. Janus's job is to wipe clean the hard drives for recycle or send them through chop chop, their metal shedder. Easy enough right? Except, Janus is a computer wiz kid, app developer and hacker. With little to no time for socializing with kids her own age or anyone for that matter, Janus creates her very own social network of family and friends called 'Shadownet' out of the discarded hard drives of Assured Destruction's clients, including her real life classmates and friends. Everything is fine until one day she gets a laptop from a mysterious foxy lady which she is suppose to promptly destroy, only she doesn't when she finds it belongs to a classmate, Johnny. She proceeds to create a Johnny profile to add to her "friend" circle. But soon things go wrong, really wrong. Her real life friends begin to come under attack online (and offline) and information only found on their "discarded" hard drive begins to appear all over the web. It is not before long, Janus finds herself tangled in a web of deceit, danger and death, as well as the loss of her family's only source of income. Janus defies all logic and goes after the culprit trying to destroy her, her family and friends.

What I liked:
I loved the character, Janus. She was well developed. She felt like a real teen, smart, responsible (sort of), strong-willed, sassy, creative and perfectly flawed. Her decision making skills were quite lacking. While I think she deserved everything that happened (minus the injury but kids have to learn their actions have consequences), I was rooting for her the whole way. I loved that she had the integrity to fix her mistakes and to protect her family and friends (even the ones who turned on her).

The story was unique. I don't think I have read anything like it. It was modern, even I could relate to the use of present day technology and social media. It addressed a real present day problem of not being careful with your data, identity theft. While Janus, did not pose a real threat, others do.

What I didn't like:
The love triangle. I'm not a fan of romance so I was not all that into the love triangle. I thought it was pointless. While I loved the ending, I thought the last line was a bit cheesy and a bit over dramatic. I think the author did a great job keeping the pace however there was one part that I felt was a over described and  bit drawn out. I don't know if it was because it was overdone, or the nature of the scene, or because I was so tensed and terrified for Janus that the scene seemed to take so long to get through. I found myself trying to skim over it to get to her actual escape and rescue.

Overall, I enjoyed Assured Destruction. It is a fast, engaging, and entertaining read, great for a rainy day.

Book Blast: January Black by Wendy Russo

January Black

Sixteen-year-old genius Matty Ducayn has never fit in on The Hill, an ordered place seriously lacking a sense of humor. After his school’s headmaster expels him for a small act of mischief, Matty’s future looks grim until King Hadrian comes to his rescue with a challenge: answer a question for a master’s diploma.

More than a second chance, this means freedom. Masters can choose where they work, a rarity among Regents, and the question is simple.

What was January Black?

It’s a ship. Everyone knows that. Hadrian rejects that answer, though, and Matty becomes compelled by curiosity and pride to solve the puzzle. When his search for an answer turns up long-buried state secrets, Matty’s journey becomes a collision course with a deadly royal decree. He's been set up to fail, which forces him to choose. Run for his life with the challenge lost...or call the king’s bluff.

Refreshingly intelligent and loads of fun!
I lost a few hours as I read this book. It's a Young Adult novel that is refreshingly and astonishingly intelligent, and the love story is perfectly played out.
~Christine Ashworth, Amazon Review

The mystery was intriguing - I loved how Wendy Russo weaved in all her secrets throughout the book, how she incorporated just enough to keep you reading, while never actually divulging much of anything. I was guessing for most of it and that's pretty hard to make me do.
~Julie, Clean Teen Reads

Wendy Russo has created a masterpiece.

Blog Tour: The Red Madrassa + Review

The Red Madrassa was quite an interesting read. I am not a total fan of magic but I did enjoy the different elements that the author wove into the story. While reading the story, I pictured my eleven year old niece liking the story. Be sure to read all the way to the bottom; there is a giveaway involved ;)

A magical accident threw them together. But when Fate holds all the cards, it can be impossible to tell the difference between pure chance and Destiny...

The Madrassa, a magical school for mage practitioners, is the stuff of legend. With selective entrance exams and quotas for only the most advanced of mage children, it's almost impossible to attend.

When Allorna, a guardian trainee for the royal family, ends up on the doorstep of the citadel on the eve of the final day of a recruitment ceremony, she decides it must be fate.

She was sure she knew the path her life would take before she enrolled. But sometimes life has a way of throwing in magical curveballs and strange friends, just to see if you’ll trip up.

Oh, and one of those friends is a mage accused of murder, another is a slightly psychotic dragon, the third a healer facing an existential crisis, and the last is a female storm-caller with more hidden secrets than a thief lord.

Do they all belong at the new school they call home?

My Review:

The Red Madrassa is an adventure story about five young people who find themselves destined to be students of the Madrassa, a school of magery. If anyone knows the Arabic language, madrassa means school. :) While the fantasy world in the story itself did not seem to have a middle eastern flavor to me, there was mention of the "caravan tongue" and Allorna, one of the main characters addressed one of the merchants at the town near the school in Arabic, or the "caravan tongue." I thought this was interesting.

The story follows Allorna, a gradis or imperial guard trainee, who is determined to help another youth, fifteen year old, Maride, who is accused of murdering his fiance. I have to admit, I was shocked when I learned the fiance was another man. Did not see that one coming at all. Sidimo is Allorna's friend and accomplice in breaking Maride out of his prison tower. Sidimo is also known as a 'deathkeeper' his clan once had the ability to keep death at bay of the ill and injured. But now they really can only offer diagnosis and how bad off the patient is, no real healing knowledge. Sitara is an Octupani. Her story begins by being struck by an energy source as she tries to use a portalway and waking up in the Madrassa. Vedaris is an outcast, a Sahelian dragon without the power to transform into his original Sahelian form or fly. His story begins when he escapes onto a ship that is torn apart by a storm. He also wakes up with healers at the madrassa around him.  All five arrive at the same time to the madrassa.

On the run from the authorities, Allorna, Maride and Sidimo decide to enlist in the academy, fate? Allorna thinks so. It was the last day of the Admittance of Harthur, mid-year admissions. They all initially pass their preliminary tests which means they all have magic or magery in them. Further tests decide the school of study, earth, fire, water, air, research, politics, the unknown or healing sciences. The bulk of the story follows each student as they learn more about their innate powers and those that will eventually help them in life. Allorna is accepted into the School of Fire, Sidimo into the School of Healing, Vedaris into the School of the Unknown, Maride into the School of Research and Sitara into the School of Air.

Their lessons are all interesting and begin to unlock mysteries of their own talents, lives and memories. The characters develop as they spend more time in the madrassa. They also begin to question how they all came to be there. They also learn more about each other. There are many secrets between them. Secrets that eventually come back to bite them. As they are out exploring the portalway that brought them to the Madrassa, they somehow pass through another hidden one and find themselves hiding from a royal convoy. They find an injured guard and uses all of their talents collectively, including Vedaris, to try and heal him. They are eventually caught, and brought before the Duke of Carne, the commander of the Imperial Guard, and the Administrator of the Citadel with most questions being answered. Though not all.

What I liked:

The Red Madrassa was quite an interesting read. I am not a total fan of magic but I did enjoy the different elements the author wove into the story. While reading the story, I pictured my eleven year old niece liking the story. It was a light and easy read. I got through it in a day. The character are well developed. I really liked all of them. While there were quite a few character point of views, the author kept them short between each character, so it was easy to stay up to date with what was going on throughout the story. It got even easier to keep up once all five youngsters were at the school. Some character descriptions were great, like the pegasi . I liked the sassy diva, Bella. The ending, was satisfying but left me wanting to know more. Overall, I really like the book and I am glad this is a 5 book series. :)

What I didn't like:

The world-building could have been better. I could not picture the world they lived in it as I read the story. There is definitely a caste structure in the story but it was really hard to understand. The author did not really go into as much detail as I would have liked. While I loved the main characters, there were too many I think, especially since all five point of views/stories are told.
